What is going on?

I'm hoping I'm not the only one who experiences this, and that someone can explain it. Numerous times over the years I have received multiple flirts (or in one case, hotlist) from a verified member (clearly not a fake profile), but then they never respond to any IM or mail messages. And on IM, the messages I send are marked as "Read." I wondered if the flirts were sent by the system, not the owners of those profiles, but then why wouldn't they say something? I find it very strange.
