Military To Increase ... It's About Time
Military To Increase ... It's About Time Today, President Bush announced that the size of the US Military will increase. I say ... what took you so long? We cut back on the military too far in the 90's. I understand we were trying to achieve a peace dividend after the end of the cold war ... but I think we cut back by a couple of divisions too far. Many will say that the only reason for the increase is so that the US can pour another 30,000 troops into Baghdad in a last ditch attempt to quell the partisan fighting that is making the city unlivable. While I think the likelihood of that happening (though I'm unsure of the number of troops) is very possible, we would need the increase in the military anyway. Right now, the majority of our combat troops are on a cycle of 1 year deployed followed by a year at home, then back for another year. This can get old real quick ... besides being a strain on military families. This increase in the military will also relieve some of the stress on our Reserve and National Guard Troops that have been doing an admirable job ... balancing deployments to the combat zones of Afghanistan and Iraq with fighting natural disasters and helping out the Border Patrol on our Southern Border. I will say this ... rather than deploy more troops to Baghdad, let's send them to Afghanistan to kill Osama (even if he is in Pakistan). Nothing would make me happier than seeing pictures of his dead body on the nightly news. How would you like to see the additional troops used? A) In Baghdad ... to try to quell the Sunni-Shiite fuss. In the US ... providing much needed relief to both our active-duty and reserve forces. C) In Afghanistan/Pakistan ... hunting for Bin Laden's head. |

Iraq has to be solved...the quicker it's self-sufficient, the quicker all the troops can be reallocated as needed, be it for Bin Laden, or relief or peacekeeping. This is true for the US as well as Canada, UK, all the countries involved in their respective roles in the middle east.

I wish the military would have gone in hard and fast and taken care of things quickly and gotten out. There is no reason for this whole thing to drag on the way it is, other than it's on Bush's agenda. Now, on a lighter note ... ¯]¯ ¯]¯]¯ ¯]¯]¯]¯ ¯]¯]¯]¯]¯ ¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯ ¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯ ¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯ ¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯ ¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯ ¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯ ¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯ ¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯]¯ xxxx xxxx xxxx ÌÌÌÌÌÌÌ ÌÌÌÌÌÌ ÌÌÌÌÌÌ I am decorating Blogland! Since I was so opposed to waging war on Iraq (from the beginning - not just when it became fashionable) it's difficult for me to answer this. What I wish is that INSTEAD of starting (yes, starting) a war with Iraq, we would have done whatever was necessary to ferret out bin Laden. Force, intelligence, strategy - whatever it took. As it is, it reminds me of a not so funny version of the old joke - a woman is looking around the sidewalk on 4th St. A man asks her what she 's doing and she tells him she's looking for her earring that she thinks she dropped on 3rd St. When he asks why she's looking on 4th St instead of #rd, she replies that the light is better on 4th St. And in case you think my vehement opposition to ever going to Iraq in the first place is based on some sort of lefty pinko kumbaya thing go look up Gary Hart's plan for the military, from his pre-self demolition presidential bid days. Now THAT was a plan... Yeah, I'm still [blog 1hotwahine]

Too bad about the "Monkey Business" No kidding. And what made me freakin' nuts was that he DARED the media to follow him. It was either the pinnacle of hubris or stupidity, never really decided which. The further irony is that the man is brilliant. Sigh... Hart was pretty far to the left on some issues, but moderate on more, and really sharp regarding military strategy, from what I could see. Yeah, I'm still [blog 1hotwahine]

Hmmm....my first choice would be Afghanistan....agree with you that getting Bin Laden is more important. However, seeing as we seem to be mired in Iraq, I would support sending the additional troops there, if it meant that some of the troops who have been stuck over there too long, away from their families, could come home....
