I go with a hard G even though I have no idea what the Oxford English Dictionary's opinion is. Not sure I really want to what it thinks and hope no killjoy will look it up and tell us. If you see me in the real world, come say "Hi Justskin." I always behave. Preferably not well.

Oh sh*t. Here we go again. Typically, since I don’t know how to pronounce it and don’t want to sound silly, I spell it it out. “Hey check out this G I F file” But on the rare occasions I’ve said it as a word I use a soft G, like Giraffe. So, Jif But say it in a style like Clint Eastwood. So nobody questions me. 🤣 Have a great day! 💋 Staci

I agree, and think most women prefer hard as well. AND it applies in this case too. Premature Perhaps, but I ALWAYS Miss Out on this Stuff The End of the Crackberry [post 3312759] My Private Post - Tell Me ALL Your Secrets – Anything you write here is just between us

My nuts are numb, but for an entirely different reason than the person you blocked. I gotta find me some luvin'!!! To me, it's like the peanut butter. If you pronounce it like g in golf, a person may think that you dropped the "t" and expect something of consequence, rather than a silly animation. But I suppose that, "A hard "G" (as in guy) is good to find!". Or is that, "A good "G" is hard to find."? I'm a standard member, so normal messaging doesn't work. But we can chat on my blog, "We Can Talk Here"

Soft G, as in jiffy peanut butter ... Glad you stopped by my world, which led me to yours ... In Luv, Lite, Laffter ...

Hard G for me, as in Graphics Interchange Format Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation bangs on the door forever!

“It's pronounced JIF, not GIF.” Just like the peanut butter. “The Oxford English Dictionary accepts both pronunciations,” Wilhite told The New York Times. “They are wrong. It is a soft 'G,' pronounced 'jif That is a quote from Steve Wilhite, the creator of the word.

I agree it really doesn't matter. I can't say I have a reason other than the soft G just doesn't sound right to me. BTW I love these fun polls. Too bad some idiots have not a clue. They probably also cannot figure out why people don't like them and they get blocked. Sad really. If you see me in the real world, come say "Hi Justskin." I always behave. Preferably not well.

I guess I'm in the minority because it's a "J"if to me and those around me!

.....and i def missed the sandwich poll. Just got me to thinking tho....i never called a hotdog a sandwich....but i guess it is. Does it have to be 2 slices of bread though for a sandwich....hmmmm. Then lobster, shrimp n clam rolls are sandwhiches.....so i guess a hot dog in a roll counts. Oh Lord....im wayyyyyy overthinking this ~

Got to be the hard one

Since the G in GIF stands for GRAPHIC, I pronounce it as a hard G.
| ||
|
Willhite clarified this himself when he won a Webbly award. The creator said it's pronounced Jif. So that's what I use ... not just because that's also my favorite peanut butter.

I think you will find there is very long running debate on how to pronounce it as both seem to have creadence , I always clled it G I F as the three letters, to me it is not a word. like the extention .pdf. It is not puff it is simply .P D F I really dont think it matters as all call it every thing fom time to time.. Good thinking point any way..!! Hard G for me as well. My best friend writes computer code and does website design on the side, she has told me more than once it's supposed to be pronounced with a soft G though.

I always spelled it out. I never considered it to be a word, but I make the J sound when I spell it.

Giggle at GIFs! I love hard things

I usually spell it out - the same as lonly says, like pdf. But then as staci points out a jpeg is a jaypeg, everyone says that. I don't care though really. Not like hot dogs.
| ||
|
I usually go with the hard G pronunciation [like giggle] then follow it immediately with the soft G pronunciation [like jiggle]. My conversations with the word gif go something like this: "Hey, did you see that gif - or jif, or however it's pronounced - I sent you yesterday?"
| ||
|
I've pronounced it with a hard G all my adult life until it was announced in the last couple of years or so that it should be more like Jif. So I'll probably use both while I try and reprogramme myself that it should be with a soft G.

|
Definitely a hard G, otherwise it sounds like a bathroom cleaner.

Hard G for me, as in Graphics Interchange Format

This is a serious issue Jajo! I feel people need to be educated on this point otherwise standards may drop. You said it yourself, lobster, shrimp and clam rolls, and a hot dog in a roll are rolls, not sandwiches. For a sandwich it must be two slices of bread cut from a loaf. im not finding that definition.....any friggin where. lol
