I agree with SuperBJ - a sandwich is a filling between two pieces of bread as cut from a loaf. A hot dog is filling inside a roll or a bun.

I don't know if you have them in Florida, but in England there is a strong tradition for making sausage sandwiches - a sliced hot sausage between two pieces of buttered bread with tomato ketchup or brown sauce. This is NOT a hot dog!

anything put between 2 slices of bread or in a bun is a sandwich that includes burgers.

It is an easy meal to carry around that didnt need a plate or a knife and fork to eat it invented by Lord sandwich which is where it got its name from. when he got hungry during a battle he asked his servent to get him some bread with something in it as he was too busy fighting a battle to have a cooked meal.

A hot dog is NOT a sandwich. A sandwich consists of two separate pieces of bread. Hot dog bun sides are attached to each other. Subs are also not sandwiches since they are also made on buns whose sides are attached to each other. However, hamburgers ARE sandwiches because their buns have a top and a separate bottom. I rest my case.

I eat my hot dogs plain ... I love naked wieners.
I object!! The connected parts of said buns are only there for transportation purposes and are no longer necessary once the "sandwich" has arrived on the plate.

Counsel, may I possibly watch you eat your hot dog naked or is it naked hot dog? Or both?

BUTT!!!!!!!! if the hot dog bun is sliced thoroughly in half making two totally separate pieces, then one could arguably say "it is a sammage!

Sorry, I am not buying SuperBJ's reasoning. It matters not whether the bread is hinged as many a small sandwich has been made by folding a slice of bread over the innards. It just matters that it have a top and bottom.

As for a hot dogs other fillings, I go with ketchup and raw onions and will refuse any with mustard or relish or anything pickled. As for the ketchup vs mustard or worse both I would advise you to not do a poll on that as in some places that is a hotter issue that Covid shot on not.

If you see me in the real world, come say "Hi Justskin."

I always behave. Preferably not well.

I think it IS a sandwich. It’s meat in bread. Defending this, I bring up a popular sub sandwich shop. They do not slice the bread all the way through. It envelopes the ingredients. Is a pita pocket a sandwich? Traditional po’ boys are similar in build also.
I like my hotdog sandwiches with a little mustard, just a spritz of ketchup, chili, cheese, diced onions and sometimes diced jalapeños!
If it’s deemed not a sandwich, then what is it? A delicacy all on its own?
So...is PB&J not a sandwich because it's not meat between the bread? Hmmm.

I could make a solid argument that hot dogs are actually in the Taco family.

Rebuttal (teehee she said butt)

If hot dog buns are not cut all the way through for "transportation purposes" then why are hamburger buns? They are transported the same ... and usually together.

It's the wiener that's naked but I can be, too!

A sandwich? Not a sandwich? Does not matter to me, it is a hot dog, and they are delicious. I eat hot dogs in a variety of ways depending on my taste that day. I do prefer them fried, with a little crunchy outside, rather than boiled or microwaved though. One of my favorite ways is with diced onion, diced tomato and spicy mustard. P.S. I also love a good chili dog with mustard.

Oh now, if I may. PB&J IS a sandwich. A super delicacy. I was simply staying in the meat department of the sandwich family. Traditionally considered a combination of meat and bread. Is a quesadilla a sandwich? I would say yes. Is a taco a sandwich? No. I would argue that a line, albeit a fine line, is drawn due to the differences in the outer covering. A flour tortilla is closer to bread. Does that make a fajita a sandwich? No. That falls into another bringing up wraps vs. soft tacos. I’m getting off track. I defend the hotdog as a sandwich.
What if your bun breaks at the seam?

Have a great day! 💋

Ok. For the best interest of the group.
Tonight I will be having chili cheese dogs. Hotdogs will be grilled. Crisping in some places, skin slightly splitting open. Buns will be warmed on the grill. Lightly toasted, but stil soft. Chili will be homemade. (Actually leftover from last night).
Diced onions, diced jalapeños, ketchup, spicy ketchup and mustard will be available.
Cheese will be fresh grated mild cheddar.
Will have take a vote with dinner participants and relay results tomorrow.

Have a great day! 💋

Well, we did not have hot dogs last night. Maybe tonight. But….
Wifey says the hotdog is not a sandwich.
Oldest says it is not a sandwich. It is a stand alone class.
Youngest says it’s a taco.
Wifey made me a sandwich for lunch today though. Not sure if things are right in the universe.

Have a great day! 💋

No where is it said....that the 2 pieces of bread must be separate. What about when one puts a hotdog on regular bread, not a roll....then it suddenly becomes a sandwhich. Me thinks NOT.

i love the discussions of this tho....

I admire your reasoning and respect your view Jajo, lol. It is perfectly reasonable to say that a hot-dog is a type of sandwich. However, in the Oxford English dictionary, the word sandwich is defined as " Two slices of bread with meat or other filling between." Other dictionaries follow the same formula. I admit that the words "cut from a loaf" are mine. I added them for clarity as the words "two slices" imply that the bread has been cut from a loaf.

I am happy to concede that a roll could also be "sliced" open. But as I mentioned to Enigma, in England there is a tradition of putting a hot sausage between two pieces of buttered bread; this is always called a "sausage sandwich," to differentiate it from a hot-dog, which as we know, is a sausage in a split roll.

I think it is well known that the sandwich was named after the 4th Earl of Sandwich, John Montague. Lord Montague is said to have asked his cook to bring him something he could eat without leaving his desk, (or in an alternative, more colourful report without leaving the gambling table) and his cook brought him sliced beef between two slices of bread - later called "A sandwich" in his memory.

So the true answer, and the reason votes have been divided so evenly on this question, is that in the broadest sense of the word a hot-dog is a type of sandwich, in the same way as a filled roll or a pitta pocket. But if the word sandwich is used on its own, it implies a sliced bread sandwich, not a hot dog.
