potful of ashes
A potful of ashes
dumped into your soul
no fertiliser of the heart
as if you are coming apart
when they say no
and the tides turn
everything easy now against
the numbing cold bites
no fresh insights
confused tangle of wrongs
every right is wrong
earth scorched of hope
need a friend
to listen to words
tumbled out and incoherent
ease the bruising
be a poultice
taking poison out
and bringing warmth back
and if none there
the silence loud presses in
seems skin burns
an itch and a twitch
nerves all unaligned
from world now apart
to love deaf dumb and blind
such a bind
when yes is no
and a potful of ashes
rather than blooms rising
in your heart.
