December upon us

Once again December rolls around and we fall into the xmas spirit and do our best to feed off of the happiness that surrounds us.
As I walked through the mall and spent time to actually look at peoples faces for more than a quarter of a second I noticed that I could count on one hand how many people actually looked happy and seemed to be relaxed.
How many of us actually "put on a good face" for others around us, our or our family.
Where I am going with this is I have came across a few members of the opposite sex that seem to put on a show of how wonderful there life is, how much they enjoy every minute waking moment of there existence. How much the love there significant other and how much there significant other loves them.
Weather you are in a committed relationship, or a single playing the field I don't think that life is 100% roses peaches and butterflies.
My question is why do people obsess to show off that the have a "perfect" life to people who don't really matter anyways?
