Remembering the Glory Days of Netflix

Chris Boger's Justine aka Cruel Passion (1977) is one of a couple of flicks that tried to capitalize on the brief tabloid notoriety of Royal galpal Koo Stark, cast here as the unfortunate object lesson of the Marquis De Sade's theories of the prosperities of vice. Noteworthy today as an early work of cinematographer Roger Deakins, even if he's given few opportunities to display his genius other than managing to make England look foggy.

The coolest thing in Jesus Franco's Female Vampire is a hood ornament with wings that flap! Otherwise it's mostly an excuse for pouty Lina Romay to loll around in the altogether, interspersed with odd philosophical musings by a blind doctor, an obsessed admirer, and Franco himself as an inquisitive coroner. For some reason Romay's character is a mute, meaning everyone except the audience is spared her interior monologues.

Michael Cort's Zeta One is a melange of dire British sex comedy and lame Bond parody - our hero James reports to his boss, "W" - that's just how topsy-turvy this crazy thing is! Before we even get to the plot (relayed in flashback yet), we have to wait for twenty minutes while our hero plays strip poker with Yutte Stensgaard. I never thought I'd hear myself saying this, but that's not half as fun as it sounds. The plot involves James Robertson Justice as the villain, Charles Hawtrey as his most effete...I mean, elite agent, and Dawn Addams as an...alien? I guess? Anyway, she's having women abducted and transported to outer space, or...somewhere. I give up, it's all just an excuse for the likes of Valerie Leon to get their kit off, as I believe the expression goes across the pond.

"Write it on your heart that every day is the best day of the year." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
