Contrary to what you may have heard, it was not illegal to drink booze during prohibition. All the 18th Amendment did was make it illegal to make, sell and ship alcohol for mass production and mass consumption. So if you wanted to have a drink, you could. It was just finding a place to buy one that got a bit tougher. And speaking of amendments that didn't do what you may have thought, the 21st Amendment didn't suddenly make all that alcohol making and selling legal again. All it did was say that the 18th amendment was no longer the law of the land.
