Sidelined By An Injury (Part Deux)

As some of you who have read my blog for any length of time know, I was sidelined last year by a plantar fasciitis injury while training for a marathon in September. I was very proactive with seeing my doc, getting physical therapy and not overextending my runs. Luckily, I was able to rehabilitate my injury and complete the marathon although my time wasn't as good as I'd hoped.

I took up yoga at the recommendation of my doctor as an injury prevention and have been engaging in yoga practice five days a week. For those that aren't familiar with yoga, there are 8 different types. I alternate between two different types of yoga classes:

Hatha

Hatha yoga is a generic term that refers to any type of yoga that teaches physical postures. Nearly every type of yoga class taught in the West is hatha yoga. When a class is marketed as hatha, it generally means that you will get a gentle introduction to the most basic yoga postures. You probably won't work up a sweat in a hatha yoga class, but you should end up leaving class feeling longer, looser, and more relaxed.

Vinyasa

Vinyasa (pronounced "vin-yah-sah") is the Sanskrit word for "flow", and vinyasa classes are known for their fluid, movement-intensive practices. Vinyasa teachers choreograph their classes to smoothly transition from pose to pose, and often play music to keep things lively.

I should preface this by saying that there is a guy that takes the class that I have a bit of a crush on. Ironically, he always manages to position his mat in front of me and off to the side. Last Tuesday, I was taking a Hatha class. I was trying to impress him with my flexibility. The instructor led us into "half pigeon pose."

As I forward folded over my leg, I felt a pull in my left hip. I didn't think much about it.

Next, the instructor led us into "cow face pose."

It was then I realized something wasn't right. When I bent my left leg, I felt a sharp pain behind my left knee.

I finished the class, later realizing that maybe I strained a muscle. I iced it, and took ibuprofen. Next morning, I felt better and headed back to the gym. I did a 6 mile run then followed it with yoga. It was then I noticed the tweak in my left leg.

Thursday more of the same. Friday worse. Saturday, I could barely WALK it hurt so bad. This weekend, I've been lying around trying to stay off of it.

Being an invalid is killing me! The weather is so sunny and warm, it's all I can do not to get out for a quick run. My common sense is winning out though. Getting clothes on my lower half without bending my leg is a particular challenge. One which produces excrutiating pain.

I'm thinking I should just go naked. What do you think?

How is your weekend?

I used to run 10ks and do small tris. One thing I learned was that rest days were nearly as important as run days. Also, massages, when I could get them, were very helpful.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

A massage is something I could really go for right about now.

Warning signs! You must learn to listen to what your body is telling you. It can keep a minor injury from getting worse. Pushing through the pain is for when you have a valid need to get something done not just to finish a routine. Ignoring a pain is different from ignoring an ache and you will be made to pay for it as you are learning. I did the same thing ignoring a pain in my knee and I have been paying for it ever since.

Vive La Difference

Thanks for the advice. I guess I am pretty stubborn when it comes to recognizing the importance of listening to my body.

It's a lovely day to go naked. So glad that I have the weather on my side! Not that I'll be getting outdoors much to enjoy it. Sigh.

I signed up for a “hot yoga” class at my gym a few years ago. Talk about you’re bait-and-switch! Seems it is done in a room with elevated temperatures! WHO KNEW.

But seriously, it was a good and fun workout, and now I sign up for it every “deep winter” session. (They offer it year-round, but NO WAY I’m doing it when it is anything except butt-cold out.) Suffice to say that this 58YO male body cannot come close to stretching the way those 20/30 YO females can, but I endure and listen to my body.

I hope you recover soon – I know what an exercise fanatic you are.

I learned a long time ago, never try to impress anybody in the gym. Hope you heal up soon!

Go naked and see a doctor. This injury sounds like it is not getting better on its own.

Please keep us informed about your condition.

Sounds as though your injury will take more than a couple of ibuprofen and a week of rest...
Hope you heal completely soon

Go naked sounds like the way to go. I had outside work I should have done but opted do inside work, which I will regret later.

I have a ton of outside work I could be doing right now. I'm waiting until any risk of freezing passes then I intend to do some spring planting.

as a working massage therapist for 15 years, ive seen many owees, pulls and strains. Ive had my own injuries to nurse. Doctor, yes, good idea. She's going to tell you to rest. And that's what you should do. Let your body heal itself. If you have a massage therapist you trust, got see her. She'll keep the energy and blood flowing, like passive movements, not just for your structural systems, but also assist the blood and fluids to feed and heal what's tweaked. hope you feel better soon.

Going naked solves some problems but then creates more.....

I have dealt with a shoulder injury past few weeks. I hadn't taken anything until last month...seems as if the advil is working.....

I should also mention that I can't see much in the first photo, but the woman in the second photo is absolutely gorgeous.
