Step Away from the Blog: Warning Signs You Might Have a Blogging Addiction

This is my contribution for humorguaranteed for Warning Signs Is The Topic For The Fifth Virtual Symposium

Blogging is a great hobby and a very rewarding way of spending your time. Compared to some other activities people do (like watching TV) blogging has the potential to improve you as a person and that is mainly why I love blogging.

You can learn a lot from blogging- it improves your writing skills, it connects you to people all around the world and it helps challenge you to see different perspectives. For me, blogging has become an outlet to alleviate stress, satisfy my innate desire to help others, and it's a helpful way to seek out advice to life challenges.

If you're like me, you realize the inherent worth surrounding blogging and you may see yourself as a very dedicated blogger. But with anything done to excess, it has the potential to become an obsession. Lately, I've had to consider warning signs signaling a potential blogging problem and have concluded if you find yourself doing any of the following you might have a blogging addiction:

1. You find yourself checking your blog first thing in the morning and last thing before you sleep, plus all day throughout the day.

2. You check your visitor numbers or your comments area has become a compulsion.

3. The anticipation of getting that very first comment is killing you.

4. You look at everything in your life around you and think “I have to blog about this.”

5. You become extremely frustrated when the access to your blog is slow.

6. You love staying at the top of the leader board so you constantly publish new posts, several times a day every day.

7. As soon as you step away from the computer you check your blog on your smart phone.

8. You feel anxious and panicky when you cannot visit your blog.

9. You compromise your real (offline) life by always choosing to spend time blogging rather than spending time with your family or friends.

10. You friend your readers and other bloggers at the faceplace, you text each other and consider them to be your "best friends."

If you can identify one or more of these signs in yourself, you might be a blogging addict. You may be so obsessed with your blog that your blog may be owning you. It might be prudent to think about finding a balance in your life. Disconnecting, relaxing and working on your blog during a set, specific time will help you achieve this balance.

I agree! First comment made, anticipation averted!

I feel the same way about blogging and will admit there were times that it bordered on obsessive. But like most things, it ebbs and flows. At this point, 6 or 7 years into it and over 700 posts, it has become a permanent fixture in my life. And I can't imagine not having this outlet...but yes, it has it's place and isn't my whole life. Great post! xoxo

Always tell the truth
Use kind words
Keep your promises
Giggle and laugh
Be positive
Love one another
Always be grateful
Forgiveness is mandatory
Try new things
Say please and thank you
Say your prayers
Smile

I am a admitted Blogoholic. I check mine all the time to see who commented and to see how many have visited. I blog first thing in the morning cup of coffee in hand. I blog about world events, old stories, people I know, work issues, anything I can think of. And yes I started as a way of meeting new people and improving my writing skills, but it has almost become an addiction. And addiction I can live with. So Blog On.
My name is Dean and I am a Blogoholic.

Good to meet you Dean. I am a blogaholic as well. Maybe we should start a support group for self proclaimed blog addicts!

I don't experience of the symptoms you have listed. I actually might be guilty of abusing my blog......I go days ooops maybe a week without posting.

I consider my blog to be one of deserted tropical islands where all we serve is Corona Light.....

A (very hot) female ex-manager once made a comment to the effect of “I wonder where you learned to write so well?”. DAMN was I tempted to tell her!!

My blogging obsession (not addiction really) was in full view when I returned from a week away and was facing a sea of yellow.

Excellent observation. I think this site is addictive and most of us find ourselves going through with drawls if we are not online reading and commenting back almost daily.. Some good advise and I am looking forward in seeing what others have written for this symposium. hugssssssssss V

Maybe we should have a meeting?

Hi! My name is Voyuer and I'm a blogger. I tried to quit but couldn't. I cut back but gained so much weight I had to start it up again. Besides, my ex wanted me to quit and I won't give her the satisfaction. The DTs when I stepped away from the keyboard were just unbearable, too. So here I am!

Write on, Myelin!

Funny the things we let enslave us. Blogs, text messages, phones I guess those are better than drugs and alcohol though!

Your post is a great insight and a great personal relief to me!

Several times in the past months I found myself being the first to comment on your blog posts. In light of recent Couples Dating discussion topics I was worried that you might think I was stalking your blog.

Now I am relieved to think that my quick responses actually make you happy, not frightened. Phew!

Those other people are the ones with a problem, not me. I've got MY shit together! I'M FINE! I can quit any time I want, I just don't want to.

Wait... we're only addicted if we hit ALL of these, right? Right????

One person's warning signs is another person's Dedication To The True Cause!

Great post... and yes, a few of those hit uncomfortably close to home... but certainly acknowledging these traits is the first step toward ameliorating 'em.

I don't have a problem, though... and I am going to check back on this page every eight minutes to see who agrees that I don't have a problem.

Glad you joined us for the virtual symposium, and looking forward to your participating again next month!

I think that the number of posts is certainly indicative of how much time many spend BLOGGING.

I'm a new blogger....I can certainly understand the allure as mentioned by Myelin...but Right now, I'm BLOGGING but I DO NOT INHALE!!
