ford

the first phrase that comes to mind is:
Found On Road Dead, second is First On Race Day.

Anyway, I have been looking over cars, not to buy one, just my mind wanders farther than iwojima is from me. At times I think of myself, other times I rummage through space and time.

On to today.
I drive a ford, its a beast, V8, only problem 8-10 mpg. I love the thing to death, all wheel drive, its what an SUV is good for, cargo space and the capability to go off road. So i have no problems with their SUVs.

Now we go to their sports CAR, not utility vehicle.....
Over great lengths of time, chevy and ford have had unparalleled success with their lines of sports cars- the camaro and mustang respectively. Over this period of time though, the camaro has out-performed the mustang year after year. With the retirement in 2001/2? the mustang had no competition in the american market and was thus the uncrowned "king" of car-lots.

Thus with recent years ford has had nothing to compete with and has had shameful standards for the mustang... which is not saying much, they flop in most areas when push comes to shove.

The big problem with the mustang is that Ford is trying to make a "practical" sports car. Why are sports cars designed: to put speed in the hands of the common man. If someone wants to break the speed of sound, should have become a pilot, here we are not talking about practical things, we are simply talking about: I wanna go fast!

Today is a gift, that is why it is called the present.

I think the problem here is what exactly is a "sports" car. The Mustang was not originally designed to be a sports car, strictly speaking, and never has been. After all, the original was just fancy sheet metal on a Falcon...continuing the Ford tradition of doing such "image" cars, just like the original Thunderbird. It was designed to be an affordable image car for secretaries and such.
You can't really say the Camaro is/was a true sports car either, but it's evolution went more in the muscle car direction than the Mustang did with the hideous things Ford did with that until recently.
The Corvette would be the closest thing to a true sports car that either of these two companies has mass produced, and that really only refers to the ones of the last twenty five years or so.
Just my opinion anyway....and we all know about those, don't we?

Boss 302 not a muscle car? Fairlane 427 not a muscle car? Stang 428 SCJ not a muscle car?....sounds like a true Mopar guy speaking!!!LOL

The U.S.A. had only one Sports car from '53-'93,when Dodge introduced the Viper, although Ford did make an attempt at a sports car with the GT40,but not much ever became of that.

Most Muscle Cars were horrible at handling, they were way to front end heavy to perform that way,and never were meant to,they were made to go fast in a straight line, and thats it,forget about braking too, cause most were drum brakes!

All Corvette's at their time of introduction were sports cars, and some, the big blocks, you could also call a muscle car,it sorta jumped across that line in'65 with the 427 425 horse engine.V,your right about the 55-57 t-birds,they really were more of a personal luxury car,BUT the would run a Corvette into the ground in a straight line with the 312 supercharged engine.

Camero......i dont have a lot of good things to say about them, always thought they were over rated. Although the Z cars were good performers,i would much rather have a '67-'69 Firebird myself,at the time i guess they were a fair handling car, just didnt like the smaller cars myself, gimme a big block Impala over any Chevy and ill be happy.

Lets not forget that the 60's were a very different time in american automotive industry, you could about have anything you wanted,GM had COPO cars, where they would make it up for you in any way you wanted,Mopar would ship a Dart to Hurst and drop a 426 Hemi into it for you,Ford would make you a 427 side oiler Galaxies ,if thats what you wanted, that dont happen anymore, you buy the cookie cutter car the the guy next door has,and thats it.

Just my 2 cents
