damned if i do and damned if i dont

For the past 8 or so years I have been fortunate to be with a great group of guys who every christmas finds a family that needs help, we get the toys for the and help out the parents if we can..
I found "our" family this year..a single mother with 6 grown up and a 2 month old baby..I was a little taken back by the response i got from my friends..I know thru working with my mother and sister thru Catholic Charities and St. Vincent De Paul that there are people who know how to work the system and I see in their questions that they aren't to wild about this family..never the less we are committed to helping them now..i just hope it isn't a scam and that she truly needs the help
